Belgium is a small, densely populated country (10.39 million inhabitants with 339 people/ km˛) with three official languages: Dutch, French and German. Its capital, Brussels , is also the capital of the European Union.
Despite its small size, Belgium has a unique and complex institutional and political structure.
The standard of living in Belgium is among the highest in the world. Belgians benefit from an excellent educational system, universal healthcare and social security, and they usually own their houses.
The one thing that most non-Belgians would agree with when first meeting Belgians is that they are generally reserved and introverted. They often change their minds though when they’ve had a chance to visit a Belgian’s home where the welcome is warm and the food and drink plenteous and delicious.
Many have also commented that it takes time to form friendships with Belgians. But once the friendship is formed, it will last forever.
